ORLANDO, FL. (September 22, 2009) – Those affected by breast cancer can now find support via a new social media community. Women Playing For T.I.M.E. ® (Technology, Immediate Diagnosis, Mammography and Education), the all-women volunteer group that supports M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando, has launched their new website, wpft.org, marking the start of an online community where blogs, podcasts and group forums link breast cancer patients and survivors together from around the world.
“We are thrilled that this online community is now a reality,” said Clarence Brown, MD, president and CEO, M. D. Anderson – Orlando. “It is so important for cancer patients and their family members to have a community available to them where they can feel safe and comfortable reaching out for support, advice and guidance as they navigate their cancer treatment.”
The WPFT website will feature blogs and “Pink Podcasts” focused on breast cancer issues. In addition, those logging on will be able to participate in group discussions and moderated forums, take a virtual tour of M. D. Anderson –Orlando’s Breast Care Center, and view video clips from the latest WPFT events. Information about upcoming WPFT golf, tennis and rowing events as well as volunteer opportunities will also be available on the site.
“This website has been a vision of ours for years,” said Andrea Eliscu, operations vice chair, WPFT. “Through this online community, breast cancer patients in Central Florida and beyond will have a safe place where they can go to share their experiences, reach out to help others and garner support from one another. This site will also help raise breast cancer awareness and support the work of M. D. Anderson – Orlando.”
