The Event
One theory holds that the French word "tenez" is the root for the word “tennis.” "Tenez" means "take heed," and, in a broader sense, “play.” Each October, women from all over Central Florida gather to “take heed” of breast cancer by raising funds for M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando. And they gather to “play” to strengthen and cement friendships with other like-minded women.
In its third year of existence, WPFT launched the two-day tennis tournament. The success was phenomenal. In 2003, WPFT changed the tennis component and began interclub tournaments, which opened the door to many more women throughout the greater Orlando area to actively participate in this exciting event!
In 2009, 12 private and public tennis clubs participated in WPFT tournaments. In 2010, there are plans to add a men's division.
Tournament Chair
Although each individual tournament has its own Chairperson, Jill Nadler serves on the Board of Women Playing For T.I.M.E. as the Chairperson of Tennis For T.I.M.E. She was introduced to the organization by Elaine Lustig, one of WPFT's founding members. Elaine spoke of the organization in such a loving and meaningful way that Jill immediately wished to contribute in some way. Her love of tennis and a need for a Tennis Chair seemed like a match made in heaven!
“I am incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to assist WPFT in the capacity of Tennis Chair,” says Jill, “and to be in the company of amazing women who dedicate their time, energy and hearts to raise awareness of breast cancer and to offer so much to the women of Central Florida through their significant fund raising efforts for M. D. Anderson - Orlando.”
Results
With the combined revenue of all the following participating clubs in 2009, Tennis For T.I.M.E. was able to contribute $23,000 towards the overall check presented to M. D. Anderson – Orlando.
